It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Professor George Clement Bond, The William F. Russell Professor of Anthropology and Education, Director of the Center for African Education and former Chair of the Department of International and Transcultural Studies at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Professor Bond played a key role in the history of African Studies at Columbia. He served as the Director of the Institute of African Studies (IAS) from 1989 to 1999 and was responsible for securing Title VI funding for African studies and language training. This grant brought recognition to the IAS as a National Resource Center for the study of Africa. He continued his service to African Studies as the Director of the Center for African Education at Teachers College, and in his mentorship of students.
