Research Initiatives

The Institute supports a range of research initiatives. Most recently, our focus has been on the Arts of Citizenhship, a project supported by Partnership University Fund. 

Ifriqiyya is a faculty-organized colloquium at Columbia University concerned with the study of Africa before Western hegemony.
An interactive international course offered at Sciences Po (PSIA and Ecole doctorale) and Columbia through IAS in the School of International Affairs and Public Administration (SIPA). These courses include lectures by professors Europe, Africa, and the USA on the latest research in African Studies on the topics of citizenship, social movements, urbanism, philosophy, and politics. The course is supported by the French-American Cultural Exchange Partner University Fund grant entitled African Humanities Project (AHP) between Columbia and Sciences Po.

This past year, the Insitute of African Studies has been engaging with the question of African art in a global society with the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies and faculty at Sciences Po.
